Four More Unissued Hat Stamps recorded

A recently revealed discovery by a collector in Massachusetts has tripled the number of unissued “H” Hat Postcard Rate stamps from two to six.

The discovery pair, photographically cropped and shown here, were exclusively reported by Stamp Collector when they were discovered three years ago (Nov. 22, 1999, page 1).

Now, a damaged strip of four yellow-background “H” Hat Postcard Rate stamps, discovered in an accumulation in Spring of 2001 by a stamp collector in Massachusetts, has been revealed by a collector who wishes to be anonymous.

The collector cannot recall if he soaked it, or if it already was loose when he first added it to his album.

The strip was canceled on April 2, 2001, by two partial strikes of a large-diameter magenta double-ring handstamp from Greencastle, Ind., which is located between Indianapolis and Terre Haute. That’s about 850 miles from Albany, N.Y., where the only other reported copies were used.

Ironically, just days before the new find was reported, the Albany cover, shown above, was auctioned June 16 in a Greg Manning auction in New York City, fetching $2,760, including a 15% commission.
