Quartet Honors Outstanding Wonen in Journalism

Four se-tenant 37¢ Women in Journalism will be issued Sept. 14 in Fort Worth, Texas, to coincide with the Sept. 12-15 Society of Professional Journalists national convention.

The stamps were designed and illustrated by Fred Otnes.

The stamps honor four accomplished journalists who blazed the trail for women in the fields of investigative journalism, war correspondence, and political reporting.

to either side of the header across the top of the commemorative pane gives a single-sentence summary of each woman's journalistic achievements and contributions:

'Ida M. Tarbell (1857-1944) wrote a landmark trust-busting exposé as well as serialized biographies for McClure's Magazine.

'Nellie Bly (1864-1922), intrepid reporter for The World, won fame for circling the globe in just 72 days (Nov. 14, 1889 - Jan. 25, 1890).

'Ethel L. Payne (1911-1991), known as the first lady of the black press, covered the civil rights movement for the Chicago Defender.

'Marguerite Higgins (1920-1966) of the New York Herald Tribune was the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting.'
