Stillwell Imperforates SurfaceA full pane of the 10ยข Joseph W. Stilwell definitives with all 20 stamps imperforate was discovered about two months ago in Vermont, according to the New Jersey error specialist auctioneer to whom it has been consigned.
The pane, which comes from the lower central position in the six-pane printing sheet, has horizontal perforations only in the right margin selvage, about 4 millimeters away from the stamps in the pane. According to a report in Linn's Stamp News, the holes in the right selvage are horizontally elongated, 'perhaps the result of the perforator punching two holes through the paper in almost the same position,' which suggests that the error occurred as the result of a paper feed problem in finishing the stamps. These are the first major errors in the Distinguished Americans definitive series, which began with Stilwell Aug. 24, 2000 (Stamp Collector, Aug. 14, 2000, page 10). A collector in Massachusetts acquired the pane and consigned it for auction, in which it will probably be broken down into the four plate blocks and two vertical pairs.
