U.N. Unveils Aids Awareness Semipostal

The first semipostal stamps ever to be issued by the United Nations Postal Administration, dedicated to AIDS Awareness, are part of a larger commemorative issued planned for Oct. 24 at the Fall Postage Stamp Mega Event in New York City.

Pictured below are three vertically formatted commemorative stamps created for use, from left to right, at U.N. offices in New York, N.Y (denominated 37¢).; Geneva, Switzerland (1.30-francs); and Vienna, Austria (1.53-euros).

The stamp design features a photographic image of the United Nations Headquarters building in New York City. Visible at upper right on the building's facade is the familiar red AIDS ribbon.

A similar design, featuring a nighttime view of the New York skyline with the U.N. building at center, graces a trio of AIDS Awareness semipostal stamps that will be released as part of circular souvenir sheets.

Shown above is the version for use at U.N. offices in New York, which is denominated 37¢+6¢. The versions for use in Geneva and Vienna are valued, respectively, at 90-centime+30c and 51-euro cents+25c.

The additional postage rate will be contributed to the global fund on AIDS and health established in 2001 by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
