Unique Newspaper Stamp Certified

Listed by the Scott catalog as PR54 but never valued, a possibly unique $36 brown rose U.S. newspaper stamp of 1875 has been certified by Professional Stamp Experts of Newport Beach, Calif.

It is the only known surviving example from a special printing of 100 stamps by the Continental Bank Note Co.

Only two were sold during the nine years that the stamps were available. Both were bought by German dealer Paul Lietzow, in 1879 and 1880.
