Souvinir Sheets Include Corporate LabelsOn Nov. 20, Singapore Post issued the first pair of $2 stamps in a planned series of six titled 'Singapore: A Global City.' The series ostensibly celebrates the sesquicentennial of the first use of stamps in Singapore and the upcoming 2004 World Stamp Championship, to be held in that city from Aug. 28-Sept. 1 of that year.
Each set of two stamps has its own theme, including Leisure & Lifestyle (comprising the Nov. 20 issue), Communications & Technology (scheduled for release on June 18, 2003), and Trade & Industry (February 2004).
In addition to the individual stamps, a total of 15 souvenir sheets - to be released five at a time, as part of the three stamp installments - will also be available. In what may be a philatelic first, each sheet features one stamp-like label paying tribute to a corporate brand name. Shown above is a complete souvenir sheet from the first of the three issues, showing both $2 stamp designs and a label featuring the McDonald's corporate logo. The remaining five corporations in the Leisure & Lifestyle set include American Express, a credit card and financial firm; Reader's Digest, a publisher and direct marketer of magazines, books and other products; Coca-Cola (shown below), a leading producer of soft drinks; and Swatch, known for its innovative watch designs. Upcoming Communications & Technology labels will feature CNN, a 24-hour global news network; Siemens, a technology firm; Creative Technology, specializing in personal digital entertainment products; Singapore Airlines, one of the world's leading travel providers; and Microsoft, the worldwide leader in software, services and Internet technologies. Finally, the planned Trade & Industry release incorporates labels for AIA, one of Asia's largest life insurers; Shell, a leading oil refinery; GlaxoSmithKline, a pharmaceutical firm; Sony, manufacturer of audio, video, communications and information technology products; and HSBC, a banking and financial services firm.
